What's the cost of living and job prospects like in Perth compared to the other major cities in Australia?
Hi,
My family is planning to move to Perth this year, but we heard that the cost of living is high over there. My husband wants to go to Fremantle, is it cheaper to live over there? However, I am more concerned if we could find work easily.
Thanks Lei

2024 update: For food prices specifically, the ABC has recently published an interesting article comparing typical costs in NZ, Australia, UK and Ireland. NZ comes out the most expensive.

Another thing to factor in for cost of living is Australians pay no income tax on the first $18,200 earned in a year. NZ has no tax free threshold. We've found that this can really help you feel like you are doing better over here than in NZ.
Hi Lei,
This site has a really detailed breakdown of the cost of living in Perth, which you should find useful: http://www.aussiemove.com/aus/costlive.asp
Perth would definitely be a bit cheaper than Sydney to live, and possibly cheaper than Melbourne. Apparently Adelaide offers the lowest cost of living of all the major cities in Australia though.
Perth has a very vibrant economy, but I'm not sure how it would compare to Fremantle in terms of finding jobs. I would suggest checking Seek.com.au to see what's available at the moment.
Cheers, Grace
