If I am officially bankrupt in New Zealand, am I able to reside in Australia?

You can't leave New Zealand without permission after you've been declared bankrupt. So you'd need a good reason to get permission for moving to Australia during that time.

But what if you declare while you are out of Nz and already living in Australia?

I don't know for sure, but I have heard of this happening to others and they have been able to stay in Australia. There may be issues at Customs though if you were to go back to NZ and then try to return to Australia.
