I am a US Citizen living in New Zealand as a Permanent Resident...What do I need to live in Australia?

Being a NZ permanent resident doesn't give you any help moving to Australia unfortunately. It's only NZ citizens who can go on the special category visa. As a NZ permanent resident you'll need to apply for a visa to live and/or work in Australia: http://www.immi.gov.au/immigration/
