My sister is an Australian citizen and I have no relatives in New Zealand

I understand that there may be a way of getting Australian citizenship straight away if both my parents are deceased and I have no other close relatives in New Zealand...some sort of "family reunion" type application? Can anyone help? Also, if I did get Australian citizenship would that be of assistance to my wife? She is Thai and has Kiwi permanent residence. We both intend on living in Australia.

Hi jono,

You could try looking at the Remaining Relative Visa which lets you join brothers/sisters etc in Australia if they are your only near relatives left: http://www.immi.gov.au/migrants/family/115/

Getting Australian citizenship would definitely be of assistance to your wife, although if you just move to Australia on your Special Category visa, she should be able to join you on the New Zealand Citizen Family Relationship (Temporary) Visa http://www.immi.gov.au/migrants/family/461/

Cheers,

Grace
