Moving to Australia with thyroid disease (hashimotos). experience of care, medication synthroid, WTE?

I have Hashimotos and i am thinking of moving to Australa. If anyone has thyroid disease, how good is the treatment there, lab only or holistic? Do you need to go private to get WTE, can you get synthroid? What is the cist like in medicare? I. currently see a private holistic GP and she put me on synthroid, i have suboptimal thyroid levels ie low in the NZ ok range. Feelings heaps better but wonder if i won't be able to carry on with this treatment plan in Australia. I appreciate its a long shot anyone will know about this. Thanks.

Hi Jessie, just wondered if you made the move and how it worked out? My wife has had humorous and has her thyroid removed, we currently reside in NZ but we are looking to jump the ditch. Would be curious to know how you got on as we have not found the care in NZ very good post surgery.

Hi, I made the move. The difference I found is they do not have synthroid here. I swapped to generic which I did not feel as good on.

They also are not as into holistic care and go off the THS so they often won’t adjust the meds based on your symptoms.

I have been all over the place since moving.

You can claim Medicare for some costs to see a specialist and then pay the top up which is cheaper option compared to NZ. Even then I have not found a decent endocrinologist in SEQ.

If your wife has no thyroid it may be easier to manage? Dose wise? I am not sure?

Best of luck

Jessie
