My British Partner has a job opportunity in Australia (I'm American) will I be able to work?

My British partner has a job prospect in Melbourne. We are both rather keen to live abroad and I think it would be a fun opportunity. However since we aren't married and I'm American I'm really concerned that I would not be allowed to seek employment as well. His work is sponsoring him for a Visa so he is all set. I have a good job now at a radio network, but I don't have a degree. So I don't think I could get a visa separately from him by applying for a job beforehand. Is there a visa I can go on attached to him? So that I can seek employment once I've arrived? I really would NOT be comfortable not working. We have discussed getting married but haven't set a date yet. We could definitely tie the knot before we go if that would be better in terms of a visa. Any guidance would be extremely helpful!
