Does immigration really know if you have a criminal record?

Should I tick the criminal record box? How would Australian immigration know if I had a criminal record for something minor that happened 15 years ago?

Yes they will know. I went to Australia in 2007 I ticked "no" to the convictions part on the card but I have 3x convictions from 1996 for agg robbery. Customs scanned my passport and said immigration wants to see me. They then took me into an interview room and asked why I ticked no and retrieved a copy of my criminal records from NZ and did a character assessment on me. They interviewed me for almost an hour, but because the convictions were when I was a teenager, and I've been clean since, they let me in.
