Contents insurance for medicare card?
We're moving to Melbourne in a couple of weeks and want to get the Medicare card sorted as soon as possible, we've heard you can't even get a broadband internet connection without one!?
Going through the list of required documents to prove you are going to live in Australia the only one's both me and my partner can really use are letters from our employers saying we've resigned. We are both boarding at home to save so we cant show an end of tenancy agreement(though we could get our parents to write us something..) and we're not willing to close out nz bank accounts as we both need to send money back to nz to pay some bills here, we don't have contents insurance living at home either. My partner will have some stuff shipped over but that wont be for a few weeks after we find a place and I'm not shipping anything over so Transit documents are out.
We will be staying with friends for about a month while we try and get jobs so the only thing I can think of is to get contents insurance? What are some good companies to start looking at and what can we expect to pay? it will be for a minimum amount of stuff, like 10k between us, we're both 26 and will be staying in Richmond.
Excuse the long question!
Medicare is a tad ambiguous, don't rely on it, theres ALOT is doesn't cover. Your better off going health insurance, bundled in with contents and car insurance, you can get some great deals. plus you get a tax rebate on medicare, as you wont be using it. When i went to get medicare, i didn't need all of those documents you mentioned. in fact, if i remember correctly, all i needed was a bank statement with my address on it. So you could open a commonwealth bank account before you arrive, and get the mail sent to the address you will be staying, and get medicare the day you get here.
Hmm, that would be good if that's the case but there website says you need two forms and have read on this forum a few times that a bank statement is no good if you opened your account before you arrived in the country(witch we have).
I think we'll still try and just hope we get someone reasonable at the counter, I'm just concerned as there's allot of horror stories on here.
We plan on getting private health insurance once we have jobs and are settled, we more wanted this medicare card as you need it to get internet connections etc.
Branching off a bit but does anyone have recommendations for insurance companies(contents and health) over there? This is one of the trickiest things about moving - In nz we know who all the good and dodgy companies are but we have no idea in a new country
Regarding which insurance companies to use and which to avoid, you might find it helpful to use something like:
This should help you avoid any companies that are terrible to deal with.
