Are the residential rental properties in Sydney fixed term only and not open term?

I am moving to Sydney in Dec and looking for renting a place in Sydney. I want to know if renting a residential property in Sydney comes only with the option of fixed term. Like I have rented in Auckland for 3 years and here its not common to have fixed term. In Auckland we can give a 4 weeks notice as a tennant to the landlord and move out. For the landlord it is 6weeks. Dont they have this option in Sydney? Atleast this is what I found on fairtrading.nsw.gov website. Any advice

Most places in Australia work in a fixed term and are called leases which are usually bound by a term and a contract. You'll find most houses are 6-12 month leases. However these are regularly and easily broken all you need to do is pay rent until they find someone new to take the lease over.
