Thanks, I am moving from rural Southland to Melbourne in a couple of weeks. How often do the trains and trams run? Can you just stand at a station and expect to see one arriving shortly? Do the trains go to outer suburbs like Pakenham and Cranbourne?

Trains and trams run every 10-20 minutes (roughly), although it varies from route to route and time of day. They are more frequent during rush hour and drop off after 8pm at night. Yes the trains to go to Pakenham and Cranbourne, but they don't go to all the outer suburbs.

You can find timetables here: http://www.metlinkmelbourne.com.au/timetables

Here's a very useful map of the metro train network: http://www.metlinkmelbourne.com.au/maps-stations-stops/metropolitan-maps/metropolitan-train-network-map/

And you can get tram route maps here: http://www.metlinkmelbourne.com.au/maps-stations-stops/metropolitan-maps/metropolitan-trams/

If you don't have a car, we've found it's good to find a place to live with a tram or train running past within 1-4 blocks walk. Any further and it gets annoying on rainy days etc!
