Do New Zealand permanent residents have to pay for maternity support/birthing etc in Australia?

I am a New Zealand citizen, my wife is a New Zealand permanent resident. We are moving to Australia - if my wife falls pregnant, will Medicare cover pregnancy costs?

If your wife has a permanent Australian visa she will be able to get Medicare which will allow her to use the public system for free (and all maternity-related services). If she is only on a temporary visa though, she will have to have private health insurance as a requirement, so it would be wise to get a policy that covers maternity care so you don't have to pay extra for that.
