NZ citizen with Australian debt, possibly looking at moving back to NZ

Hi,

Just wondering what the possible issues would be for an NZ citizen living in Australia moving back to NZ with outstanding Australian credit card debt?

Debt is roughly around 15k. This is Australian debt, not NZ.

Parents will be in Australia so I would likely be visiting them in the future.

Will they still chase for for the debt in NZ? Stopped at customs?

One of the debt is with AMEX and I'm getting conflicting info on what will happen so any advice on this would be great.

You won't be stopped in customs as it's a civil matter and Amex will sell the debt on to a local firm for a fraction of the price. They would try and chase you in Aussie but generally won't bother bankrupting you. Even if they do you can still earn up to 70k plus super in Aussie before having to pay any back. You will have bad credit history in Aussie for some years but shouldn't affect NZ unless using a sister bank such as CBA and ASB and even then possibly not.
